31 European countries took part, with events and promotional activity
Additional support via social media a 25 million Twitter reach measured on 19 September and a total reach of 37.2 million, measured from 11 June to 21 September
LAST YEAR’S Project EDWARD (the European Day Without A Road Death) took place across Europe on Wednesday 19 September. Devised in 2016 as Project EDWARD by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL), the initiative once again aimed to raise awareness of road safety and reduce the number of people killed every day on the roads of Europe.
European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc said:
“Today we are reminded that we need to step up efforts to achieve a European Day Without a Road Death. Only by working together we will be able to combine real awareness with effective enforcement measures, and make a difference on European roads. Stagnation is not an option. Let’s keep shooting for excellence.”
TISPOL General Secretary Ruth Purdie commented:
“The figure of 50 deaths on Europe’s roads on Project EDWARD day is below the average of 70. But we must remember that there is a terrible tragedy behind every one of these deaths, as well as a massive economic impact. That is why we must continue to play our parts – whether as politicians, policy makers, police officers or simply as individual road users – to take responsibility for our own safety and that of others. Because it is the simple act of taking individual responsibility that would lead to a significant and sustained reduction in road death.
“We should, however, be proud of our efforts in raising awareness of road safety through Project EDWARD. The best-ever social media figures confirm that Project EDWARD struck a chord far beyond the road safety sector.
“There is no single solution, but we must be willing to look for new ideas, new partners and new technology. But above all, we need to work together to clamp down on dangerous behaviour.
“We firmly believe that if each road user can make small changes to reduce risk, then together we can make some big improvements – and reduce the number of people who die or are seriously injured on Europe’s roads.
“With Project EDWARD we have a great resource to motivate road users to reduce risks and improve safety while driving, riding, walking or cycling. A day without a road death should be our goal every day, not just on 19 September.”
Highlights of Project EDWARD 2018 included:
A road trip totalling more than 3000km across 10 European countries, starting in Dublin and ending in Madrid on the morning of 19 September. The road trip, sponsored by Michelin, was completed in a specially decorated Volvo XC60, provided for the Project EDWARD team by Hertz.
Stops were made at government departments, police headquarters and road safety operations along the way, including participation in a large-scale road safety day at Michelin’s Ladoux test facilities near Clermont-Ferrand.
A conferencein Madrid, hosted by the Guardia Civil, with an opening presentation from Mrs Colette Curran, who lost her son Edward in a road collision in June 2016. Presentations were provided by Antonio Avenoso of the European Transport Safety Council, Emma Kelly of Road Safety Support, Chris Spinks of Westcotec and Darren Lindsey of Michelin.
A 60-minute broadcast, also from Madrid, featuring highlights of the road trip and contributions from police officers, road safety practitioners, representatives of victims’ associations and commercial sponsors.
A lively and extensive social media campaign, with a Twitter reach on 19 September of 25 million and a total reach since 16 June of 37.2 million. 1Support was received on Twitter from governments, fire and rescue services, politicians and industry representatives. There was also a tweet on 19 September from F1 hero Nico Rosberg.
